How to Become a Good Travel Photographer: Never Forget these Points

Travel and leisure photography is a particular form of travel photography. In this article, we’ll guide you with different topics on travel photography that will help you to become a good travel photographer. I am doing travel photography for about five years, and I like to share my experience with you.

Most of the people are not professional, and they like to create a memory for a long time. That is why most of the travel photographers are not professional. It may be your hobby or excitement that helps you to take images during a journey because we like to share pictures of the special moments with our friends and family. It may be on Instagram, Facebook, or maybe a tweet. Here are some key points that help you to become a good travel photographer.

Planned preparation for your Trip

The first point is that you need a plan and preparing for your travel photography. It includes what the equipment you require during your journey right from camera, lenses, flashes, tripod, battery are. You can’t imagine what you may expect during your trip to capture images. It may be daytime or night, and you must be prepared for everything.

Limited equipment and Unlimited Expectations

Unless you are a professional photographer or a photographer from the National Geographic Channel or Discovery Channel, you have limited equipment in National Parks. At the same time, you have limited money in your pocket or a limited period to visit a particular place. So you must carefully choose your resources right from the camera to the batteries. But, equally, you have unlimited expectations from your journey. It may be your friend, social networks, and stock photo agency. So try to cover all the equipment so that you may require throughout the journey. It is better to perform a dry run before your trip.

Check your Resources

If you are visiting a public place, you may buy something that you forget. But if you are visiting a national park, and you are forgetting to put an SD card in your camera, it is hard to get one hand; you will miss the chance to take images. If you are a person that just buys one new camera and you visit Kaziranga National Park. After one hour, you find that your SD card is out of space. There may not be any possibility to get under one. My personal advice is to bring at least a 1/2 SD card along with you.

You need some Guidance

We often visit a particular place based on some previous guidance. It may be from earlier images in the guide book or a video on the YouTube channel. It may be a new animal with particular characteristics or a new board or a new species that you are interested in. During my journey to Jaipur, of Rajasthan in India, I found a new species of birds that are common to everyone but new for me and to my native place. I’m also able to take a photo of that bird.

Time and Weather Condition:

People are visiting a particular place from different parts of the world. For a travel photographer, it is cheap to visit a specific area during the off-season. But, it may not be suitable for touring. For example, if you are visiting Rajasthan of India during May and June months, the temperature will go beyond 40°. Your hotel room rent may be low but had to stay there during those times. Ideally, it is after October month the temperature level is moderate, and it is easy to visit.

Use your Technology before visiting a place:

You need to think and do a little research on the weather condition in different parts of the world before visiting a site. There are lots of tools on the Internet like Google Earth or the photographer’s ephemeris. All these help you to figure out the latitude and longitude of the place, and accordingly, you need to adjust your timing for taking sunrise and sunset images. It will also show you the schedule of moonrise and help you with the night photography.

Logistics for Effective Photography

You also need to look for logistics for compelling photography, which is another crucial element during outdoor photography. For quality and convenience, you may require additional space and private vehicles if you are looking for wildlife photography during your trip.

Use a polarizer

You may use polarizing filters, if you’re looking for travel photography during noontime, say from 11 AM to 2 PM. This will filter the light coming from the blue sky. Light comes not only directly from the sun but also reflecting from the blue sky. So using a, a polarizing filter will give you a lot of glare in your images. It will also help you to create better light conditions artificially.

Looking for better composition:

The composition is another critical element of travel photography. It is also better to composite a scene using foreground, Middle town, and background simultaneously. Most of the travelers take images just standing in front of a say river, and it looks like a snapshot. Because you are taking only the background or middle ground of the composition.

Take notes during the trip

It is also essential to take a few notes during your trip. This will help you to keep crucial memories during your trip, expenses, and experiences. Equally, this may also help you to remember the time of bookings, essential phone calls, or even communicating with local guides. You may also use your android mobile to keep notes but always keep paper writing all-important numbers. So that if you lose your phone, you may have something to remember and to communicate.

Use Instagram

The most critical task of a travel photographer is that you need to look for the right place for photography. Google may help you by providing 80% of the information. Equally, Instagram is another option where you may look for a location with high ranking photos. It is also best to communicate high ranking hotels for information regarding your journey. But, keep in mind always go for the second consultation before starting a journey.
